During Construction

We are pleased to share with you these photographs taken during the construction phase of the restaurant.

 A Little History:

After searching many sites in the Ottawa / Hull region, we finally found a suitable location in which to set-up our restaurant.  Unfortunately, the site we chose was in poor condition and would require a great deal of repair and modification before we could open our doors to the public.  But we were determined and dedicated.  It took about 3 ˝ months in which to complete all phases of the construction.

As soon as we opened the front doors, it dawned on us;  To make this place into the best Thai restaurant in Ottawa, we would need to do a lot of hard work and make major changes to the entire interior of this place.

This location, was once the "Day Light Lounge" bar.  It never had a kitchen, just a bar and a dance floor.

The view shown here is the entrance way, looking in from the front doors.

After examining the premises, we knew we had a lot of hard work ahead of us.  This is the location we chose to construct our kitchen.  We noticed that the floors and walls had suffered a great deal of water damage from equipment previously used by the old owners of the site.

Tiles were peeling and badly stained.  So too were the walls.  Clean-up would be major if we wanted to have this area clean enough to be our kitchen.

The view shown here is at the entrance to the kitchen

This area was going to be our small dining area.  It would give the clients a window view and allow a little more privacy from the main dining room area.

The area around the windows needed a lot of repairs due to chipping and broken pieces of concrete. Everything had thick blue and yellow paint on it.

This area was to be our main dining room.  What can I say... a mess!  We had our work cut out for us.

Our first goal was to clean... clean... and clean some more.  Only then could we then begin the task of removing all the old paint from the floors and the walls.

Here we see the kitchen walls going up... Before this we had to remove old floor tiles, dig out the floor to install floor drains, install the ceiling, and ceiling lamps, rough in all the plumbing and rewire for the equipment.

We wanted to allow are clients to see the kitchen so at one end we created a half-wall effect.

The main dining room wall.   Blue paint and graffiti all over it.  Blue paint was everywhere, on the floors, the walls... The blue had to go....

We wanted to keep the original brick look, but it had to be reconditioned to give it a warm feeling and pleasing look to it.  We decided on a custom red-brown mixture of sealer and paint.

The bar ... We wanted a unique look to it... we shopped around for a bar, but decided to design and build it ourselves...

This was a long process.  It had to have the right look to pull the decor of the restaurant together... It was central to the whole restaurant.

Main entrance ... We decided to create a half wall at the main entrance... This served many functions.  It would stop any drafts from reaching clients, It would separate the small dining area and it would serve as a waiting area for clients.

We used Oak and a special stain to finish the look.

Perhaps the worst job of them all.... Removing the blue paint from the floor.  We found the original floor was wood... The paint was so thick that regular sanding methods would not work... we resorted to sanding by hand and edge sander...

Many, many hours were spent on our knees removing the paint... The dust created by removing the old paint was incredible.

I think the after image says it all....

A view from the back of our main dining room, looking towards the bar... Notice the blue paint on the walls, the unfinished ceiling and floor.

Again, the after picture says it all.  I feel that we got the look just right.

This image shows the entrance way into the washrooms.  We had already done quite a bit of work on the walls already, when this picture was taken.

We wanted it to look elegant ... I think we got this right too.
